Principal's Message
Welcome to our Website, and thank you for your interest in Bishop Kearney High School. We have been serving the young women of Brooklyn and Queens since 1961 by providing a first-class education founded on the love and truth of Jesus our Redeemer.

From the beginning, the school was entrusted to the Sisters of St. Joseph who took ownership of the school from the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1973. Bishop McEntergart,
who dedicated the school, predicted that the students of Bishop Kearney would receive an education "second to none". That has been our goal ever since. Judging from the success of our alumnae over the years, we have lived up to that high standard.

The special mission of the Sisters is to invite our young women to live the values we hold dear. Jesus' command to love God, our neighbor as ourselves is clearly our foundation. Based on that, we try to demonstrate inclusive love for all God's children in a spirit of reconciliation and unity. Example is the best teacher, and so we, with our lay brothers and sisters of the faculty, strive to reach these ideals each day in the classroom, the cafeteria, the library, the corridors and everywhere we encounter each other.

Education today is not easy. Young people have a million distractions with which teachers have to compete each day. Hence the quality of the faculty is of the highest importance. Our teachers are dedicated Christians whose skills are seen in their academic achievements (we have three teachers with doctorates) and in the successes our students themselves gain each year. In recent years, our graduation rate has been close to 100%; and the percentage of our students going on to college has been about 99% (over 90% going to 4-year colleges). Our Regents results are among the highest in Brooklyn: over 50% with a Regents Diploma, over 30% with Advanced Regents and over 10% with Advanced Regents with Honors. Finally, we are very proud to be able to offer Advanced Placement courses in American History, Art, Biology, Calculus, English, European History, Physics and Psychology. Your daughter will be able to fulfill her total potential here!

Finally, Bishop Kearney can offer your daughter two programs which are not found in any other Catholic school in Brooklyn. Early in the freshman year, every student is invited to take an inventory on how she studies best. That information is computed into a Learning Styles Profile which outlines the best possible environment for study based on each student's unique personality. In the many years we have implemented this program, the vast majority of students have found that, when they follow their profiles, their grades, even in their most challenging subjects, go up, often by a significant amount.

The other program is our unique Religion curriculum. We accept students with a vast range of religious backgrounds. We assume no knowledge on their part at all, and we begin by examining the revealed nature of God through the pages of the Old and New Testaments, culminating in the figure of Jesus. From that basis, students are led to the realization that each of us is expected to show the same Qualities of God in our lives as seen in the lives of Jesus and his followers through the centuries. In other words, we are all called to be saints and our program tells them how, precisely, this can be done. Quite a claim!

Welcome to our school, and we hope you stay. Sister Thomasine Stagnitta, C.S.J., Principal
